Textile Exhibit

Embark on a journey through time and texture in our textile exhibit, where the humble art of crafting fabric intertwines with the rich tapestry of pioneer life. As settlers, we pride ourselves on self-sufficiency, producing our own sustenance and the very clothes on our backs. In a time when a mere 5% of cloth in the United States was factory-made as of 1816, our homes brim with spinning wheels and looms, each a testament to the dynamic spirit of our community.

Wool from our trusty sheep and linen, meticulously cultivated from flax, reigns as the primary fibers in our local textile tapestry. Step into the past and engage hands-on with history as our exhibit invites children to try weaving on a large children’s loom while children and adults alike are welcome to explore the art of carding wool. From the planting and harvesting of flax to the intricate processes of breaking, scutching, and hackling, each step in the journey from fiber to fabric is unveiled, culminating in the mesmerizing alchemy of spinning and weaving that transform raw materials into the cherished garments that clothe our community. Join us on this immersive exploration of the textile arts, where the threads of history intertwine with the fabric of everyday life.
